Energy policy in Uganda

The national energy policy for Uganda was passed in 2002. The policy provides for the energy sectors and is supported by other sub polices including the Renewable Energy policy, 2007 (REP) for the renewable sector and the National Oil and Gas Policy, 2008 (NOGP) for the petroleum sector.

The 2002 policy was initiated to sustain the economic growth the country had achieved in the last decade and to ensure widespread access to affordable modern energy. The main policy goal is: ‘to meet the energy needs of Uganda’s population for social and economic development in an environmentally sustainable manner.
